Solar PV for family homes

What it is and what it does for your home

Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current. An inverter turns it into the alternating current used by ordinary appliances in your home. The electricity you generate is used first and foremost in your household, which reduces the amount you draw from the grid.

Panels generate the most around midday, while households usually use the most power in the morning and evening. That is why it is important to think about where the electricity you generate will go – into a battery, water heating, space heating or charging your car while the sun is shining.

Output is affected by the orientation and pitch of the roof, shade from trees or neighbouring buildings, and how clean the panels are. A south-facing roof produces the most energy, while east- and west-facing roofs spread generation across the morning and afternoon.

The result is lower electricity bills and less dependence on how power prices develop. Connecting the system to the distribution grid must be approved by the grid operator, so we factor this step in from the design stage.

What the system can do and what it consists of

  • Solar panelsPanels on a pitched or flat roof, or on a ground-mounted frame, laid out according to orientation and shading.
  • InverterConverts direct current from the panels into alternating current and manages the flow of energy between the panels, your home, the battery and the grid.
  • Battery storageStores the midday surplus for the evening and night, so your home uses more of its own electricity.
  • Backup powerWith a suitable inverter type and wiring, the system can power selected circuits in your home during a power cut.
  • Protection and consumer unitFuses, isolators and surge protection on both the panel and the inverter side, connected to your home's consumer unit.
  • Making use of surplus powerSurplus power can be directed to water heating, a heat pump or an EV charger.
  • Generation overviewAn app shows current generation, consumption and battery status, so you can see how your system is performing.
  • Smart home integrationIn a smart home, your house can switch appliances on exactly when there is plenty of solar energy available.
